Around the World in 24 Farmers' Markets by Maria Bakhareva and Anna Desnitskaya has received the Prix Sorcières 2023 in the children's non-fiction book category (Editions La Partie) and the Die-Ziet Luchs Prize of the Month (Gerstenberg Verlag). For the occasion we asked Maria and Anna to play our mini-Proust questionnaire by answering our questions in unison, using the tools of their trade.
What is your most treasured possession?
Maria: Probably my old volume of Andersen's fairy tales illustrated by Viktor Pivovarov.
I moved around a lot before settling in Budapest, so I hardly have any other books from my childhood.
This one was my favorite, and everything I love about art now was embedded in the illustrations in this book.
Anna:
What is your most marked characteristic?
Maria: I'm a natural-born researcher, so all my friends use me as their reference bureau.
Anna:
Which historical figure do you mostly identify with?
Maria: I often say that I would like to be like Astrid Lindgren when I grow up.
The only problem is that I've been growing up for a long time now, but I'm still nowhere near Astrid's level!
